What makes a nerd anyhow?
In my previous post I made a statement that many so-called geeks or nerds out there were not geeks or nerds but simply posers.
Now, of course this is all in jest and good humor, but I want to continue this line of thought for fun's sake.
Perhaps what is happening is that everyone is discovering their inner nerd like Revenge of the Nerds (though less campy). Or perhaps there are a few different kinds of nerds. What we really need is a solid definition of what defines a geek and a nerd.
Tell me how I fit in:
I like Star Trek, enough to be entertained by ship layouts and schematics online.
I like computers, even repairing them when I don't have to. I stay up to date with many trends and technologies. I am addicted to my blackberry's rss reader. However, I abhor working with Linux.
I have seen most episodes of Stargate, enough to quote while I am watching it. The same goes for BTTF.
I think learning trivia is fun. Stuff like what makes paint white or speculating on wormholes.
Yknow, on second thought@l it isn't that people are posing as geeks or nerds, it is that the very idea, the terms, have lost their meaning. It is simply a cultural revolution. The words nerd or geek used to apply to those involved in the niche, but now we have come to live in a society where everyone is in a niche.
Whether it is anime or startrek, glasses or contacts, it simply has ceased to matter.
In the end, the words nerd and geek have ceased to be, like it or not.

Being a nerd
Behold! The glory days of my kind have arrived.
We nerds now have a large portion of the wealth in the world, occupying many seats of political and economic power.
We control the computer systems that the world uses for everyday activity. Computer systems that once got kids beat up on the playground.
Who does the swirly now?
Fortunately, I wasn't around during those dark times. Still, as I watch and hear about the news talking about how being a geeky nerd is now trendy, I can't help but ask, "Who the heck are they talking to?"
I doubt that wearing a Star Trek Voyager t shirt will give me a positive glance from anyone but my nerd brethren.
Still, when shows like Lost and Heroes (which I don't like for other reasons) gain so much popular fair, I once again must ask Who are those nerds?
Not me, that's who. Those nerds dress and talk like the rest. Sell outs.
Strong words? Yup, but hey, back in the day that's what we (they) had.
